The ro-ro industry gathers in Bremen to plan for the future

The world’s leading ro-ro industry experts gathered in Bremen recently for the biennial RORO exhibition and conference, discussing the future of the industry as world markets continue to fluctuate. Executives from all corners of the globe came together to view the wide range of companies showcasing their latest innovations, whilst delegates at the conference heard from more than 30 leading experts.

The Conference was opened by Erik Østergaard, CEO of the Danish Transport & Logistics Association, whose opening remarks led into a well-received discussion focussing on global ro-ro shipping trends. The popular opening conference session was further enhanced with an informative roundtable gathering featuring various experts including Hanns Conzen, Managing Director of TT Line, Kell Robdrup the Managing Director of Norfolkline Shipping BV and Bo Severed, Managing Director of Stena RoRo, giving their unique analysis on the current market situation.

Following on from the opening morning’s success, the conference continued to attract a significant amount of delegates to the varied discussions throughout the three-day show. Topics ranging from ‘Shipper’s Panel Discussions’, ‘Outlook for Car Carriers’, ‘Global ro-ro Market Report’ and ‘Meeting the Demands of Automotive Logistics’ through to ‘Sharpening Competitive Edge through Gate Automation’, ‘Environmental Improvements in Ro-Ro Terminals’ and ‘Creating the Infrastructure for Technology Adoption’ were covered. The final day saw a conference highlight with John Garner, P&O Ferries Holdings and Johan Snellman from STX Europe focussing on ship design and how improvements help vessels meet emission reduction targets. Of particular interest was the closing conference discussion on safety and stability under the new SOLAS rules, climaxing with a lively panel discussion between a selection of industry experts on the new ruling.

Alongside the conference, more than 100 leading companies exhibited at the three-day event, launching products, demonstrating new innovations and taking part in a wide range of networking sessions. A range of new products were launched at RORO 2010 including Terberg’s new cost effective ro-ro terminal tractor series, Terberg RT, a completely new series of tractors equipped with the latest technology and environmental enhancements. Other innovative launches included Cavotec’s new MoorMaster®, an automatic mooring device that keeps the ship in place with a bespoke vacuum system and Langh Ship Cargo Solutions’ HOTCC 40’ unit, a cradled 40 foot container for fast and easy handling of heavy steel coils.  Other leading exhibitors in Bremen included BLG Logistics Group, Bremen Ports, Ravestein, Seaports of Nidersachsen, Buss Group, Port of Zebrugge, Houcon Cargo Systems, MAFI, Port of Rostock, Novatech ApS, Port of Nantes and TTS.

For the first time at RORO, the Speedy Business Card Exchange allowed delegates to make new strategic contacts through a relaxed networking environment. The various roundtable sessions were also a well-received addition, with visitors discussing a range of topics from climate change to the affect of globalisation on ro-ro, within a unique interactive environment.

RORO continues to attract key decision makers from around the world who were able to make full use of the varied exhibits on show at the event. Exhibitor Mats Björkendahl, Hyde Marine, displayed his robust and effective shipboard treatment solution and commented: “We had some really good quality customers to our stand and generated several very good leads, which we are extremely excited about. This year’s show has been really positive and we are very happy we came.”

Philip Hunter, Event Director at RORO, added: “After a difficult period for the ro-ro industry it is great for an event such as this to bring everyone together and plan for the future. The support shown at this year’s show further cements that RORO is the event that the industry’s leaders and decision makers attend to develop their future business strategies.

“We strive to ensure that the content of the conference programme is relevant and informative to the current state of the industry. This year’s programme, coupled with the new interactive features, made for positive discussion seminars. We attracted high-quality speakers and the topics covered were extremely relevant to all those in the industry. It is great to see RORO continuing to attract high-calibre visitors and exhibitors and will undoubtedly continue to do so as we travel to back Gothenburg for RORO 2012.”

RORO will be return in 2012 when it heads to Svenska Massan in Gothenburg, Sweden from 17-19 April 2012. For further information please visit www.roroex.com or contact Philip Hunter on +44 (0)20 7017 4395 or phunter@iirx.co.uk .
