Hyde Marine showcase Hyde GUARDIAN® at RORO 2010

German Shipyard Flensburger Schiffbau Gesellschaft is building two 195m roll-on/ roll-off ships to LR Ice Class and “Green Passport” notation for Rettig Group Ltd. Bore of Finland. The two ships, due to be delivered in 2011, will both be fitted with Hyde GUARDIAN® Ballast Water Treatment Systems, which will have a capacity of 700 m3/hr.

Hyde GUARDIAN® offers a compact, modular design, low power consumption scaled according to capacity, and simple, automatic operation. These advantages make it a technically attractive and cost effective solution for virtually any type of vessel. The Hyde GUARDIAN® two stage process includes auto-backflush filtration and UV disinfection. It is delivered as components that can be easily adapted to fit the available space on an existing vessel or can be supplied as a compact 100% skid mounted package for new construction.

Cavotec brings Mooring to the 21st Century

Cavotec, the world’s leading developer and supplier of power and control systems to mobile equipment, will be showcasing MoorMaster®, an automatic mooring device that keeps the ship in place with a bespoke vacuum system, at this year’s RORO exhibition.

MoorMaster® operates with a simple push of a button, mooring and unmooring ships automatically in less than 12 seconds. This saves time and resources, contributing to the efficient operation of the terminal. As ships grow bigger and automation becomes a reality in ports around the world, traditional mooring methods can hinder technological advances. The innovative system is the missing link between the highly developed ships and ports, and the primitive way in which until now most ships around the world have been moored and unmoored.

Shippers, ports, shipping lines and seafarers all benefit from this new system. For example, MoorMaster® helps alleviate port congestion, because vessels can be loaded and unloaded in record time while the system actively controls the motions of the ship alongside the quay. It even minimises the effects of swell and long waves regardless of the ship’s size. Visitors to RORO will be able to find out more about MoorMaster® from Cavotec’s stand, F22.

BLG presents the new Project ProKon at the RORO 2010

At the RORO in Bremen, BLG Logistics Group will demonstrate its latest project, ProKon, which is part of the German research initiative, Innovative Seaport Technologies (ISETEC II).

The aim of ProKon, which is being supported by the University of Bremen, is to design and develop a system that automatically captures the location and state of heavy load carriers and charges at ro-ro terminals. The system will integrate innovative technologies such as RFID, GPS and sensor systems to identify and locate logistic objects. Innovative inventory management strategies can then be implemented at ports and request times for carriers can be reduced. What’s more, traffic flow at terminals can be enhanced.

Visitors can find out more about ProKon by visiting BLG’s stand C52, at RORO 2010.

Safety at Sea presents to the RoRo market the iStand Decision Support Software

Following the successful installation of the Decision Support System “iStand” on RCCL’s Oasis of the Seas, Safety at Sea Ltd of Glasgow is demonstrating how its software can enhance safe operation of ro-ro vessels at RORO 2010.

In addition to being used as a Loading computer, iStand offers a number of unique features to aid design, operation, training, emergency response and decision support. These include a vulnerability assessment module which monitors and updates the ability of the vessel to survive damage, taking into account the status of all watertight doors, tanks, vessel draught and weather conditions through sensor data and user input. This allows the crew to better understand a vessel’s vulnerability to flooding; hence improve understanding of how best to operate the vessel to minimise consequences of a hull breech.

Representatives from Safety at Sea will be available at stand B62, where a working model of an example of iStand can be viewed. Safety at Sea’s chairman Professor Dracos Vassalos will also be chairing a session at the event where he will be presenting his thoughts on “Safety & Stability of RoRo vessels under the New SOLAS Rules” at 11:15am on Thursday 20 May at the RORO Conference.
